
Revenue wants to tax workers in the gig economy as soon as they are paid, with the online platforms that hire them docking taxes each time a job is completed.
This would ensure “convenience and certainty” for gig workers who often find themselves in a grey area, unsure whether they should be facing PAYE tax or an annual bill as self-employed freelancers.
The proposed reforms would improve cash flow for gig workers by allowing them to pay tax “in a phased manner in line with when earnings actually arise”, Revenue said, rather than in an annual payment due every November.
