The self-employed have faced a tax nightmare, but is that now about to come to an end? – The Times

Qadir Farooq breathed a sigh of relief when the government finally said that it would scrap the rules that have been forcing him to pay more tax.

The freelance administrative contractor from Bradford, who works mainly for banks, was subject to the so-called IR35 rules. Those rules, which forced contractors to pay more tax and created havoc for their clients, have been scrapped as part of the government’s mini-budget. That is good news for freelancers and the businesses that hire them.

Under the IR35 rules Farooq, 38, had to pay income tax and national insurance as an employee without any of the benefits of being employed: no workplace pension contributions, no paid leave.
